Covid-19 has brought more migrants to the Mediterranean
The figures decreased in April, surely due to bad weather and the pandemic. However, in May numbers of illegal immigrants entering the EU from various Mediterranean routes tripled compared to the previous month. From January to May, 5,500 cases have been recorded, virtually triple the number for the same period in 2019. Frontex has reported this, but individual countries are not responding
Post Coronavirus: notes for living true freedom
Uproot statism and streamline bureaucracy, promote subsidiarity, free schools, fiscal freedom and the freedom to be born once conceived, national loan, combat the new humanism of the supra-national globalism that conducted an experiment of limited freedom and political authoritarianism during COVID-19: the future awaiting us will have to be the phase of true freedom, an extraordinary opportunity “to re-plan our journey, to set ourselves new rules and to discover new forms of commitment. . .” (Caritas in veritate, n. 21). Archbishop Crepaldi’s notes for rebirth according to the Social Doctrine of the Church.
Trump and Viganò: a dialogue that reads current events in a Biblical key
U.S. President Donald Trump sent a tweet showing his enthusiastic support for the open letter Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò wrote to him, that speaks of a fierce battle underway between the children of darkness and the children of light. It is a reading of current events that follows the same line as the prophecies of John Paul II and the judgments of Benedict XVI. Viganò notes that at this juncture President Trump is the only international authority capable of standing up to the global power which is intent on destroying freedom, which has taken advantage of the Covid crisis and which is stirring up revolts in the United States, with even harder times still in store.
The anti-racism of anti-Western racists
An iconoclastic anti-racist fury has erupted and not just across the whole of the United States. It is now global. In England, monuments of Churchill and Gandhi have been vandalised. In America, images of Christopher Columbus continue to draw angry sentiments while the Hollywood classic “Gone with the Wind” has been removed from HBO Max. In Italy, "morelli" (little blacks) dark chocolate sweets are disappearing from shelves while the Indro Montanelli statue faces removal. But why?
Jesus is Truly Present in the Eucharist, Just as 2000 Years Ago He Was On The Cross
On the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord we especially exalt what is celebrated in every Mass: the truth of the presence of His Body offered in sacrifice for us and of His Blood shed on the Cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Today, in many parts of the world, the obligation to attend Mass is dispensed, processions are prohibited, Communion is given in the hand, desacralizing the Eucharistic mystery. It is urgent, more than ever before, to return to adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament to make reparation for the outrages against this infinite gift of Love.
The kente stole, Pelosi’s misguided “Africanism”
For the “white man” to do the right thing when it comes to the rights of Africans is becoming increasingly difficult. Nancy Pelosi and other American Democrats wore the kente stole (West African tradition and symbol of African-American resurgence) as a tribute to the death of George Floyd. The Africans were outraged.
From Fatima to Brescia, the story of a special statue of Mary
The statue of Our Lady of Fatima which has been on loan to the The Daily Compass tells a largely untold story that exudes both mystery and faith. It has been treasured by a family in Brescia for 55 years and was brought to Italy by a spiritual son of Padre Pio who held a particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin. He obtained the statue after making an “ardent” request to the rector of the Shrine at the Cova d’Iria in Fatima. This is the story....
Libya, Erdogan content. Russians and Turks work for peace
The withdrawl of Haftar's LNA troops from the entire Tripoli front rewards Erdogan's unscrupulous military tactics. This, thanks to an accord struck with al-Sarraj, undermines Italy in terms of any remaining influence it might still have over its former colony. An end to all armed conflict hinges upon an agreement drafted along the same lines of the peace accord struck in Syria between the Turks and Russians. The deal will ensure certain privileged positions in Libya, a nation that effectively ends up being split in two.
Here's what Obama would have done with today’s riots
“What would Barack Obama have said or done today for the George Floyd crisis to restore order, justice and healing?” This is the question many people have wondered in these days of fierce criticism of President Trump. In fact, a similarly tragic incident took place during Obama's presidency, in 2015 with violent protests in Baltimore. You would be surprised to know that Obama acted quite like Trump but with one big difference: the current Republican president has done much more to help the African American community.
Is life difficult for blacks in the USA? In Africa, it’s worse
African countries have now joined the crusade against racial discrimination in the United States, but they are actually in a much worse state. Since March 25, Kenyan police have fired shots into crowds killing 15 people and injuring 31 others in an effort to enforce curfews enacted to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the victims in Nairobi was a 13-year-old boy, Yassin. Nobody knelt for him. Then there is what footballer Kei Kamara had to say while supporting the American protests: "Being black in the United States is very difficult." Yet, he came with his family to the USA seeking asylum in 2000 at age 16. Kamara and his family had fled a bloody and cruel civil war which turned children into soldiers and resulted in 70,000 deaths as well as 2.5 million refugees.
“Look up” to escape the crisis
“They are called to look up, but no one knows how to raise his eyes”— the lament of God expressed by the prophet Hosea is the most truthful and radical judgment on the time of crisis we are living through. The virus is a call to conversion, but instead the world seems to attach itself more and more to idols and the path that leads to ruin.
George Floyd, the true story of the victim and icon of the revolt
By now, the entire world knows who George Floyd is, the Minneapolis resident and African American killed last May 25 by means of inhumane police detention. He has become the iconic life to defend by militant Black Lives Matter, Antifa mobs rioting throughout America and by some peaceful protestors. But do we really know much about George Floyd beyond the facts of his tragic death?
