Thy Will be done
Whoever serves me must follow me. (John 12: 26)
Jesus said to his disciples: Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honour the one who serves me. (John 12: 24-26)
All of us will die one day. It is a matter of certainty. The problem is that we tend to forget about it in order to do what we feel like rather than doing the Will of God. The death which Jesus speaks about in this parable is not, therefore, primarily earthly death but the mortification of our human will which must always obey the Divine Will. Jesus can well ask this of us because he gave us the example of doing His Father's Will in everything he did. When we recite the Our Father we pay particular attention to the words "Thy will be done" and then think of a concrete way to carry out His will today, even and especially if it does not coincide with our own.
