The Lord said to my Lord. (Mark 12: 36)

While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’ David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with delight. (Mark 12: 35-37)

When Jesus refers to Psalm 110 He teaches that the Messiah prophesied by David and who was inspired by the Holy Spirit, will not only a part of his human ancestry, but also of His divine nature. Indeed, the very premise of the quotation "the Lord said to my Lord" emphasises an equal dignity between the Father and the Son and the final and total victory of the latter. Therefore, the long-awaited Messiah does not save only His people at a given time, but is the only bridge by which men of all ages must pass to gain eternal salvation. Without the Son of God, all human action proves useless since, as Solomon, the son of David, says in Psalm 127: "If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor." Therefore, Christians are warned by Jesus to keep away from ideologies that, in wanting to build an exclusively earthly paradise, transform the lives of mankind into hell.
