GOSPEL PEARLS

The greatest miracle

And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. (Matthew 12: 15)

Gospel Pearls 18_07_2020

Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all and ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,  my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”  (Matthew 12: 14-21)

Jesus does not want to highlight the miracles He performs so as not to give them greater importance than to His announcement of the Kingdom of Heaven. Miracles must strengthen the Word of God, not divert attention from it. As for His most extraordinary and miraculous healings, we might think Lazarus’s resurrection, since it dealt with effects destined to all men who get sick and die. However, the greatest miracle really is the conversion of hearts living in a sinful situations – of  persons, thanks to changes of life and the forgiveness of their sins, can finally hope for eternal salvation.
