The golden rule
So always treat others as you would like them to treat you (Matthew 7, 12)
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls in front of pigs, or they may trample them and then turn on you and tear you to pieces. ‘So always treat others as you would like them to treat you; that is the meaning of the Law and the Prophets. ‘Enter by the narrow gate, since the road that leads to perdition is wide and spacious, and many take it; but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it.’ (Matthew 7,6.12-14)
Jesus’ warning today is sensational: those who are unworthy should not be allowed to participate in the mysteries of the faith and grace. We are also told to do good to others, exactly as we would like others to do to us. This is the "golden rule" to be remembered every day and which shows us how to behave even in the smallest aspects of our life. Finally, Jesus reminds us that salvation is difficult and requires renunciation. It is reached not by going through a large and easily accessible door, but by taking a narrow and tiring path. Convenience does not save the soul, Jesus saved us on the cross. Reread this commentary to today's Gospel and ask yourself if you are applying these teachings of Jesus in your life.
