Loving God, our neighbour, and ourselves
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? (Matthew 22: 36)
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:34-40)
The heart of the God’s Law is the love we have for Him, which is, in turn, expressed by the love we have for our neighbour and ourselves. All other precepts hinge upon this and must lead to being a witness of our love for God. Otherwise, we will end up believing that we are on equal terms with God, that is to say, owing nothing to Him. Let us resist the pride that dwells within us, because it destroys our love and the possibility of being saved by God.
