Other people are worse than me
But in order that the world might be saved through him. (John 3: 17)
Jesus said to Nicodemus: “No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (John 3: 13-17)
Jesus reveals his divine nature to Nicodemus. He also makes it clear the importance of His death on the cross. This alone allows for the salvation of souls... but not automatically. In order for people to be saved, they must first recognise the importance of Jesus and His sacrifice and behave accordingly in their daily actions. Therefore, we must remember that at the end of our time on earth, if we are condemned to hell, it will be because of our own fault. Words such as "there are other people who are worse than me", "in my case I thought I was doing the right thing" or "it is the fault of those I hang around with" will be useless.
