Don’t blame the storm

Why are you afraid, O you of little faith? (Matthew 8: 26)

And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.  And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marvelled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” (Matthew 8: 23-27)

We might think the fear the apostles felt during the storm was because of the violent waves threatening to capsize their boat. This is not true at all. In fact, Jesus reprimanded them for their lack of faith in Him. It is this very lack of faith that generates fear, and not difficulties caused by any storm. The devil can use fear to tempt us, but he will never win if we habitually anchor ourselves in God. May we trust in Jesus at every difficult moment, so as not to abandon ourselves to fear during life’s great trials.
